ACIA Member Interpreters Attended UNFPA Training on Gender-Based Violence

Conference interpreters from the Armenian Conference Interpreters Association (ACIA) participated in a training course on "Peculiarities of Interpretation in the Context of Service Provision to Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies (GBVIE)" organized by UNFPA Armenia Country Office.

ACIA member conference interpreters, recognizing the importance of continuous professional development and self-education, attended this essential training to deepen their knowledge of the nuances of working with GBV survivors in emergency situations.

During the two-hour training session, participants were introduced to the causes of increased GBV in emergency situations, as well as needs-based and survivor-centered approaches to service provision to GBV survivors, such as safety, confidentiality, respect, and non-discrimination. 

Special attention was given to the role and responsibility of interpreters in delivering GBV response services. The session explored ethical dilemmas that arise during interpretation and examined how interpretation can either protect or harm GBV survivors.

Key components of the training included core principles for interpreting sensitive topics: appropriate tone, suitable expressions, neutrality, and gender and cultural considerations.

The program also addressed situations where a GBV survivor discloses violence during interpretation. Interpreters learned about step-by-step response protocols, their responsibilities, and professional boundaries.

The training also covered interpreter well-being, including recognition of vicarious trauma, available support mechanisms, and the importance of self-care.
