European Commission fines Temu 200 million euros. What is the reason

The European Commission has imposed a fine of 200 million euros on the online platform "Temu" under the Digital Services Act (DSA). According to the regulator, the company did not properly identify and assess the risks associated with the circulation of illegal goods in its system.

Nature of the violation and legal grounds

According to the official statement from the European Commission, the risk assessment presented by Temu is incomplete, not based on reliable evidence, and underestimates the potential harm to consumers. Under the DSA, very large online platforms (VLOPs) are required to implement effective mechanisms for mitigating systemic risks. The amount of the fine was calculated based on the severity, nature, and duration of the violation.

The Vice-President of the European Commission for technological sovereignty, security, and democracy, Henna Virkkunen, noted that the risk assessment is not a formal procedure but a key legislative requirement that Temu is obliged to fulfill.

Further timeline of the legal process

According to Article 75 of the legislation, clear legal deadlines have been set for the company for further actions.
