The administration of US President Donald Trump is developing a legal mechanism that would prohibit airports located in "sanctuary cities" from servicing international flights. This was announced by US Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin.
Project essence and tools The restrictions will apply to those cities and counties whose local authorities refuse to cooperate with the federal government in combating illegal immigration and deportation processes. Secretary Mullin clarified that some local administrations hinder the arrest of dangerous criminals among illegal immigrants.
As a countermeasure, employees of the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which is under the Department of Homeland Security, may suspend border and customs checks at targeted airports. Without the implementation of these federal checks, servicing international flights becomes impossible under US law.
Impact zone Currently, there are several hundred "sanctuary cities" and counties in the United States that have their own legal regulations regarding interaction with federal immigration authorities. The largest centers on this list include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Denver, whose airports are among the largest international transport hubs.
