Climate anomalies and hot weather have dealt a severe blow to the French economy, causing significant damage to agriculture, healthcare, and the state budget.
By the numbers:
16 billion euros: Total damage caused by the hot summer, according to the parliamentary commission (MP Éric Coquerel).
8.7 billion euros: Net losses for farmers (total losses in the sector were around 10 billion euros).
~3 billion euros (-0.1% GDP): Loss of economic growth, according to the French Ministry of Finance.
2.5 billion euros: Unforeseen state expenditures (1.3 billion for farmers, 700 million for healthcare, 300 million for firefighting).
Impact on households:
Insurance: At least 500 million euros in payouts due to fires.
Electricity: Up to 800 million euros in additional costs due to the active use of air conditioners and fans.
On the other hand: The commission's preliminary estimate exceeds the forecast of the Minister for Ecological Transition, Monique Barbieux, of 10-15 billion euros. There are methodological reservations in the calculations, as certain double counting may occur in the summation of various expenses.
